I am doing some research for a friend and have hit a brick wall. Joseph Bennett, a dock labourer, was born November 1814 in Monkwearmouth, Co. Durham, England. He married, 18 January 1836 in Monkwearmouth, Margaret Fotherly, born 1815, also in Monkwearmouth. I have a complete family on down from there, but the only reference I can get for Joseph's ancestors is that his father was John and his mother was Jane. Given that families didn't move much in those days it would seem reasonable to look for them in the Monkwearmouth vicinity, but I can find nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Roy,

You mention having descendants of Joseph, b. 1814. I am stuck on a Joseph Cowan BENNETT, born 1878, married to a Dorothy WARDLE and I am wondering if my Joseph shows up in your research.

Thank you

Robert,

You have found the same wall that I have been climbing for two years. Thank you very much for trying to help me. My own research is affordably limited and assistance from other researchers, like yourself, is invaluable to me and appreciated.

Thank you your your reply. I try to help when I can, I was in the same boat until I bit the bullitt and joined Ancestry.

It was a good choice as I've managed to go back to the 1600 in my Mothers family and back to William the Conqueror in my son-in-laws family. Quite an experience.

Only problem is I'm still stuck in Baltimore with my Great Grandfather on my Fathers side. Solid wall.

I wish you well in your search.

Thanks for the reply.

I used to use Ancestry but it got so that I couldn't afford it. I'm now using findmypast/uk
