The only entries I can find on Ancestry for a father John Baines are with a wife Nancy or Ann, also several more children, although there is some discrepancy in dates. I found this marriage, which ties in date wise

Name: John Baines

Gender: Male

Event Type: Marriage

Event Date: 11 Oct 1794

Marriage Place: Saint Mary,Lancaster,Lancashire,England

Spouse: Nancy Beaumont

Register Type: Parish Register

This seems to be the only family in Claughton who fit in this period.

Hope this helps.

Hi Pauline. Thanks for your reply. A bit of a puzzle this one. I have baptism records at St. Mary Lancaster for Alice Baynes 1795, Ann Baynes 1797 and John Baynes 1801. In each case the parents are given as John and Jenny

Hi

I don't know if you know, but in the time period of John Baines snr's marriage, Jenny was often a pet name for Jane - I've had this happen twice in my tree, once where the baptism name was jenny and she married as Jane, and once the other way round. Admitted one was in Kent and the other in Wiltshire, but it looks like a fairly common thing. Anyway, I did find this marriage on Ancestry:

Name: John Baynes

Gender: Male

Marriage Date: 26 Aug 1793

Marriage Place: Saint Mary,Lancaster,Lancashire,England

Spouse: Jane Dawson

FHL Film Number: 0844800 IT 1, 0844800 IT

Actually has her down as Janes, but must be Jane. This would fit in with the earliest child's baptism in 1795.

I think this might well be a distinct possibility,

Hi Pauline. Having to type out a second time. My first reply disappeared into the ether!! Thanks for your reply and you are not alone in coming to this conclusion. And I was just about to check to see if any of her granddaughters had been given her name as a 'given' or second name as was very often the case. My cousin in Vancouver will be very interested by your reply. Many thanks

PS I used the Tribal pages regular when I was doing my researches some years ago---and I was in touch by e-mail with the site Administrator at the time---a lady---now Prof. Jill Poulston in NZ.I should have met her on a visit to Preston but my wife was whipped into hospital a couple of days before.---Pity!!
