My Holt family (N.C.) project is just beginning! A work in 
progress and a labor of love...attempting to generate a legacy to hand down to 
other generations of HOLTS and extended family members for years to 
come...welcome to our HOLT family tree ~

Please feel free to browse around and view the family history.  Posted are several generations listed that date back to Person County, N.C.  Alamance county, and Orange county, N.C. and VA.

As stories unfold, our "ancestors" originated from Germany, migrating to parts  of Virginia, then years later moved to Orange county now known as Alamance  County, NC. I was born in Alamance county however my family moved to Tennessee  over the years but still have many, many relatives residing there that have  later branched out in to several other counties.

From research, all the Holt's who were listed in the St. Aspah's and Chatham  districts of Orange county, NC in the 1790 census, were of German origin. They  are all descendants of Michael Holt (Hans Michael Holt) who moved to that area  about 1755 from what is present day Madison county.

This is a Group Project for all descendants of the Germanna Colonies of Virginia and their associated families, The name  Germanna was selected by Governor Alexander Spotswood, reflected both the German immigrants who sailed across the  Atlantic to Virginia and the British Queen, Anne, who was in power at the time of the first settlement at Germanna in 1714.

The Germanna Colonies consisted primarily of the First Colony of 42 persons from the Siegerland area brought to Virginia to  work for Spotswood in 1714, and the Second Colony of 20 families totaling 100 odd persons from the Palatinate and Baden- Wuerttemberg area of Germany brought in 1717. Additionally, The Colonies also include other German friends and families  who joined the first two colonies at later dates.

Over the years many Germanna groups of family and friends migrated southward and westward from Piedmont Virginia. The  genealogical evidence shows that many of the families intermarried for generations, producing a rich genealogical heritage.

Counties of North Carolina

Caswell County records were formed in 1777 from what was known as Orange County. Lenoir County (NC) - in 1878 and again in  1880 the county courthouse burned, destroying most records. A will book that began in 1869 survived, but original  wills probated prior to 1878 were destroyed.

Alamance County: Formed in 1849 from what was known as Orange County, NC.

Person County - formed in 1792 from Caswell County. Recording of wills began in  1792 in record books identified as "Wills, Inventories, Sales of Estates, and  Taxables." Except for Book 7, these record books were not numbered; the first  fifteen of them are in the State Archives and for internal control purposes  they have been numbered. In wills for Person County they are identified by the  symbol "WI" and by the control number assigned by the State of Archives.

From December term, 1843 until December term, 1847, there is a gap in the  recorded wills of Person County (NC) and one record book apparently has been  lost. Beginning with December term, 1847, the record books in which wills were  to be recorded were identified as "Record of Wills" and are cited as will books  (WB) in the listing in Person County. The record book for the period 1857-1867,  as Will Book 18. There are no recorded will sfrom September term, 1867, until  December 1868, when Will Book 19 begins. As of April 1, 1986, approximately 100  original wills of the county are in the State Archives.
 Less than 200 original wills remain in the custody of the Person County clerk  of Superior Court; more than half of the wills probated in the county seat  prior to 1901 are missing.

Orange County, North Carolina
  
The county was formed in 1752 from parts of Bladen County, Granville County, and Johnston County. It was named for the infant William V of Orange, whose mother Anne, daughter of King George II of Great Britain, was then regent of the Dutch Republic.

Hillsborough was used as the home of the North Carolina state legislature during the American Revolution, as well as serving as a military base by British General Charles Cornwallis in late February 1781.

The county size was much reduced through 1881 with Guilford, Wake, Chatham, Caswell, Alamance and Durham being created from Orange county in 1771, 1777, 1849 and 1881. 

Its county seat is Hillsborough.
